What is homeopathy?
Homeopathy is a system of medicine that helps the body to heal itself. Homeopathy works on the basis of using like to cure like. In other words, it treats an illness with medicine made from a substance that would produce similar symptoms in a healthy person or animal. For example an onion can cause streaming eyes and a runny nose. A homeopathic medicine derived from onions, Allium cepa, can be successful in alleviating these symptoms in, say, someone suffering from hayfever.
Not only is homeopathy good for humans, but it can also be used for animals too - your pets can also benefit from this gentle therapy.
What sort of conditions can it treat?
Most illnesses will respond to homeopathic medicines and some can be treated solely with homeopathy. Common conditions that often respond well to homeopathic medicine include allergies, anxiety and panic attacks, joint pain and neuralgia, cystitis, eczema, gastroenterological problems and stress.
What is homeopathic medicine?
Homeopathic medicines are derived from natural substances, including plants and minerals. They are prepared in licensed laboratories under strict control and can be given in tablet, granule or liquid form. Many homeopathic medicines are available over the counter at a veterinary clinic or at full service retail pet outlets.
Is homeopathy safe?
Yes. This is because homeopathic medicines are made from a very small amount of the active ingredient using a process of dilution and succussion (vigorous shaking). Two hundred years of practice, research and trials have proved the safety of this gentle system of medicine for both people and animals. Unlike some conventional drugs, homeopathic medicines are non-addictive and have no dangerous side effects.
Is it officially recognized and regulated?
Homeopathy has been used in the USA since the late 1700’s and is recognized under the 1938 Federal Food and Drug Act. Under this act Homeopathic remedies are regulated by the FDA and for animals the FDA Center for Veterinary Medicine. Manufacturing facilities are required to follow GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) and are regularly inspected by FDA personnel for compliance and quality.
In the United Kingdom homeopathy has been available through the NHS since 1948 and has received the patronage of the Royal Family for six generations.
The World Health Organization recognizes homeopathy as an affordable and effective treatment option.
